The arousal theory of motivation suggests that people are driven to perform actions in order to maintain an optimum level of physiological arousal. What exactly is the optimal level of motivation? Well, it varies from one individual to the next. Some people may require a higher level of arousal, which might motivate them to seek out exciting and stimulating activities. Characteristics of a Serial Killer What is a serial killer? A serial killer is commonly defined as a person who has murdered more than three people on at least three separate occasions with a period of rest between kills. The exact number of serial killers all throughout history is not known, but the number estimates are as high as 1,500. A question commonly asked is why these murders occur. The reason this question is so common is due to the vast amount of serial killers and the cruel nature of the crimes. Discovering the reason why these serial killers kill has brought up many aspects of the killers background. Possible reasons why they commit those crimes have been thought to been biological reasons, though no one is born a serial killer (Iona,2013) and familial contributions. However, instead of asking why serial killers kill, we should be asking what most serial killers have in common. The reason why we should be asking that is, so we can determine who is more likely to become a serial killer. There are many aspe cts to look at when determining who has a predisposition to commit serial murder. There are several characteristics ranging from race and age to childhood experiences that can predetermine whether someone will become a serial killer. There have been almost 90 serial killers in the United States in the last 40 years and there are over 30 active serial killers at any given time. Looking at common traits that most serial killers share could be beneficial to help lower these numbers. Common Characteristics Childhood Occurrences as a Factor In the serial killer community there is more instance of childhood abuse than that of the general population. Abuse, which can be defined as the cruel treatment of humans or animals, is separated into several categories. Those categories are physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect. Mitchell and Aamodt (2005), conducted a study focused on 50 serial killers who had valid background information. Information about the childhood abuse of each killer was gathered from books, newspaper articles, and online sites. Abuse was broken down into the previously defined categories, physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect and was then compared to societal norms from 2001. All categories of abuse, excluding neglect was significantly higher in the serial killer population. For serial killers, the prevalence of physical abuse was 36% in comparison to the general population as was sexual abuse which was 26% and psychological abuse which was 50%. Neglect was equally prevalent in both the serial killer and societal norm populations at 18% each. In addition to suffering childhood abuse, bedwetting during childhood is common in serial killers. 60% of serial killers wet the bed well into their adolescent years (Miller, 2004). Wetting the bed past the age of 5 is seen as a humiliating act. Many of the parents of serial killers would belittle and demean them, causing even more humiliation. Despite the higher rates of adolescent bedwetting in serial killers, the bedwetting does not exactly mean that they will become a serial murderer. However, bedwetting past the usual age does correlate to violent acts against animals. Most serial killers have admitted to acting out their violent fantasies on animals (Simons,2001). Those violent acts are often ignored or missed by their parents, as most serial killers have dysfunctional backgrounds. During childhood many serial killers reported having negative fantasies. Most of their fantasies were about control and violation. Some had fantasies about mutilating their genitals and their own personal traumas repeatedly (Allely et al, 2014). They never discussed any of their fantasies, but they often thought of fulfilling their fantasies frequently. The violent childhood fantasies of the serial killers follow them into adulthood (Carlisle,1993). Before committing their first murder, their fantasies were centered around actually committing the murder, while after committing the first murder, they would focus on acting out the next murders with greater efficiency, no matter if the murders were committed in childhood or adulthood. Head injuries received during childhood are common within the serial killer community. 70% of serial killers had received head injuries during their childhood (Miller, 2014). These head injuries were the product of repeated physical abuse, accidents, or birth injuries. Head injuries can be linked to aggressive and violent behavior. Damage to the areas of the brain responsible for hormones, aggression, emotion, and motivation can cause spontaneous aggression. Gender, Race, and Age as biggest indictors Gender, age, and race of serial killers is very important. It is crucial to know what you are looking for and physical appearance is necessary knowledge. That knowledge can also help with narrowing down the motives, victims type, and murder methods of serial killers. Most serial killers are white males and most victims of serial killings are white females (Defronzo, 2004 2007). However contrary to popular belief minorities have higher rates of serial killing than one would think (Branson,2012). As stated previously, most serial killers are white with rates over 50%, while African-Americans have numbers just over 40%. Those numbers were just for the United States, but globally speaking they are not much different with white serial killers having numbers over 50% and African-Americans having numbers at 30% (Miller,2014). When comparing male to female serial killers there is a significant difference. Over 90% of all serial killers have been male, with less than 10% being female. (Miller, 2014) There is also a significant difference in the motives and victims between men and women serial killers. While males tend to murder victims unknown to them, females murder those who are close to them. Many female serial killer victims are men and then come children and the elderly, opposite of the victims of males. The motives of women are opposite of men as well. While men primarily commit serial murder for enjoyment purposes such as power and lust (Herrero et al,2017), women do it for financial gain, comfort, and revenge. The most popular type of female serial killer is the Black Widow, which is one who murders three or more husbands or lovers for financial gain (Wattis, 2016). The method in which female and male serial killers murder is also very different. Female serial killers tend to be very effective, while also using quieter and less messy methods than males (Bartels Parsons,2014). For many female serial killers, poison is the preferred method. Other methods such as shooting, stabbing, suffocation, and drowning are also found with female serial killers, although not as commonly. Male serial killers on the other hand generally use shooting as the murder method, with strangulation, stabbing, and bludgeoning coming in close. Even though shooting is the primary method for males, strangulation and stabbing are considered the most personal methods and it adds to their enjoyment of the kill. Serial killers are at their peak during their 20s and 30s. The average age of a serial killer, combining all races and genders, is 29. The average age at first kill is 28 for males and 30 for females. However, some serial killers acted out their first murder during childhood, while a few committed their first one over the age of 50 (Miller,2014). Characteristics in real cases Most, if not all these common serial killer characteristics can be applied to real life cases. Past serial killers have had several things in common and have been the basis for what to look for when searching for a serial murderer. Prime Examples Ted Bundy Ted Bundy was born in Burlington, Vermont on November 24, 1946, in a home for unwed mothers (Piel,2015). His mother was just a teen and his father were unknown. His maternal grandparents took on the role as his parents, while his mother posed as his sister. His grandfather was described as abusive with tyrant behavior. Despite this, Ted clung to his grandfather. His real mother moved him out of his grandparents house to Washington when he was 4 to get him away from her parents dysfunctional and abusive behavior. As a teen he reported being a loner and walking the streets looking for pornography or open windows, so he could spy on unsuspecting women. He confessed to having violent fantasies about controlling women and getting them to obey him. He also had a juvenile record for theft. Ted Bundys earliest confirmed killed occurred when he was 28. Bundy tended to prey on young women in college who tended to be attractive, starting in Washington, then in Utah, Colorado, and finally Florida. Bundy would lure these women in under false pretenses, often pretending to be an injured man sporting a sling for in his arm or cast for his leg. He would convince them to help carry his books or unload items from his car. Once they got to his car he would hit them over the head with a pipe or crowbar. Bundy was able to rape then murder a confirmed number of 30 women (Piel, 2015). He primarily strangled or bludgeoned his victims before mutilating them postmortem. He prolonged his acts by going back to see his victims at their dump sites or even taking them home in order to gain further sexual enjoyment. In some cases, he even displayed the victims decapitated heads in his apartment and slept with their corpses until the smell made it insufferable. When I first looked at the book, I expected to encounter a story filled with nothing but sadness. However, after reading this National Bestseller, I found that I had discovered a tale of life. â€Å"The Last Lecture† documents the life of Randy Pausch in the form of short stories that exemplified the kind of man he lived as. Pausch’s ability to share those stories on paper with the world was quite impressive. His story-telling ability was perhaps the most positive aspect of the book. Each â€Å"mini-lesson† consisted of an attention grabbing opening, much like we are required to do in this book review (hopefully I have succeeded). For example, â€Å"Weve placed a lot of emphasis in this country on the idea of peoples rights. Having a sentence that is quite plain and simple but at the same time extremely thought provoking helped to pull me into every chapter. After an attention grabbing opening, Pausch continued to draw us in with tales of humor and light mischief. Although some of his stories deviated off topic, every detail enhanced the end result of the lesson learned. Ultimately, Mr. Pausch chose to write and present his â€Å"last lecture† for his children. The book was extremely positive despite the fact that the man writing it knew that he had very little time left to live. At the end of each short story, Pausch summed up the series of events that it consisted of and left us with a lesson learned in couple sentences. Those couple sentence at the end of each chapter proved to hold much more value than their length, however. Pausch left us with this at the end of one story, â€Å" No job is beneath you. You ought to be thrilled you got a job in the mailroom. And when you get there, heres what you do: Be really great at sorting mail† It is no mystery from the very beginning that Randy Pausch is dying of cancer. As a matter of fact, he tells us right away that he has only months to live. The author does not probe for emotional appeal with his diagnosis. Cancer is noted only when the author is concerned for the future of his family. I cannot recall a time in the book when he feels sorry for himself. His impending death is the reason for his writing of a last lecture, and I find it quite amazing how at peace he is with this. The beginning of the story consists mostly of Pausch’s professional life. He is a remarkable man in every respect, but his academic ability must be noted. Randy Pausch chose to become a university professor even though many other options awaited him. At one point in the story a man asked him what the key was to success. Pausch countered by asking the man to call him on his office phone at 10:30 Friday night and then he would reveal his answer. Ha! I love it. We learn a lot about Randy’s life through short-stories in the first part of the book. The story then progresses to where Randy meets his future wife, Jai. The two go through a unique experience before committing to each other. And their marriage almost only lasts one day! But I will allow you to read to find out the details. The remainder of the story focuses on Pausch’s love for his wife and children, including the happiness, sadness, successes, and trying times that they have and are currently facing. There are simply too many short stories to share in this book review; you’ll have to read yourself. But let me assure you, you’ll laugh, cry, and come away a better person if you do. If you asked me what Randy Pausch is trying to convey in his last lecture, I would simply say that success is not about the number of days that you live on this earth, it is about the quality of each day. It is also not about the number of breaths you take, but the number of breaths that take your breath away. Pardon the cliche. Randy Pausch demonstrates an amazing understanding of how to be happy in life. I would recommend this book to readers of age 16 and older, just because personally I feel that before 16 years old I would not have appreciated the book’s content. It is an amazing tale of a man that overcame death: not physically, but spiritually. I will leave you with these words from Randy Pausch, â€Å"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand†

Some loves transform people and bring out their best and the best in their loved ones others make the lover and loved one smaller. I remember the first time I read Henrik Ibsens play, A Dolls House, in the late 1960s, just when the feminist movement was rediscovering past literary treatments of gender roles. Betty Friedans more straightforward treatment of the ultimately-unsatisfying constrictions of womens traditional role seemed to ring more true. In reading A Dolls House then, I was disturbed by what I read as contrived characters Nora always seemed quite the silly doll, even after her transformation. And her husband! What a shallow man! He didnt evoke the least bit of sympathy in me. But Claire Bloom and Anthony Hopkins, in director Patrick Garlands 1973 treatment, show how good acting and direction can add to a play what a dry reading cannot.

This post describes three categories of headings and their functions. 1. Question Headings A question heading, as you might have guessed, is a heading in the interrogative case. A question heading like â€Å"How Do Widgets Make Your Job Easier?† directs a reader’s attention because it implies that the text that follows the heading will answer that question. Effect of Caffeine and Nicotine on the Body and Mind Stacey Campbell Abstract Caffeine and nicotine are products that we are very familiar with. Both are used throughout the world and have been for hundreds if not thousands of years. They are not illegal but they are technically considered to be drugs. They affect the brain in many of the same ways that other drugs that are addictive do. Caffeine and nicotine both affect the body as well. Both substances have been shown to have some measure of benefit but they can both cause health concerns. With repeated use the body can develop a tolerance to them which can lead to abuse, dependency and addiction. Caffeine and nicotine are however, â€Å"the most widely used recreational drugs† (Julien, Advokat Comaty, 2011). When examining the reasons that caffeine and nicotine are used by so many people we find that they are both available in a wide variety of products, are affordable and are legal to purchase provided you meet age requirements for purchasing tobacco products. They also have psychostimulant properties that users find pleasurable or rewarding. Using too much of either drug can result in habitual use or dependency. This paper will focus on the ways that caffeine and nicotine use affects the body and the mind. The main reason that I chose to research this topic is that prior to this class I never really thought of caffeine or nicotine as drugs. I knew that people could crave them, experience symptoms of withdrawal if they stopped using them, and that both can have adverse side effects and cause health problems but despite having that knowledge I didn’t think of them like I would cocaine or heroin. This could be simply because I am so familiar with both. I don’t use tobacco products but my parents smoked while I was growing up. People I work with run for their smoke breaks every day. The first thing I do when I get to work is fill up my coffee mug and I look forward to a Diet Mountain Dew when the afternoon starts dragging. Being exposed to tobacco use all my life I have always hated it so I pretty much viewed it as a very harmful, nasty habit. I admittedly have a major crush on, if not a slight addiction to caffeine. I guess I just thought of caffeine as a less than ideal cho ice but because I enjoy the natural sources it is found in I continue to choose to consume them. It will be interesting for me to research the ways that the body and mind are affected by using caffeine and nicotine when looking at them from a different perspective than usual. Caffeine Caffeine can be found in numerous foods and beverages that are included in the typical standard American diet. Among other sources we can find it in our morning cup of coffee, a chocolate bar from the vending machine or a glass of tea with dinner. If we are feeling really tired or need to stay awake to make sure we meet a deadline and we don’t think the coffee is going to cut it we can run to the local drug store and find a few medications that contain caffeine, herbal supplements if we prefer something a little more natural or even energy drinks with very high levels of caffeine if we need an intense surge of caffeine to enhance athletic performance or need to be very alert (Julien et al, 2011). Caffeine gets a bad rap sometimes. While the negative attention isn’t completely unwarranted, author Jessica Girdwain suggests that caffeine may be, â€Å"the world’s best drug† (Girdwain, 2013). She supports her theory by sharing some of the benefits of caffeine. She says that consuming moderate amounts of caffeine can sharpen your mind and improve your cognitive skills by stimulating parts of the brain that are in charge of cognitive thinking, pleasure and alertness. She also claims it can boost a sluggish metabolism by stimulating the central nervous system. Additional benefits she mentions in her article are disease prevention because consuming caffeine can reduce the risk of developing diabetes and some kinds of breast cancer as it can strengthen the body’s defense systems and can trigger the release of dopamine which can decrease the chance of developing depression. She says you may also find that your workouts may be more effective and easier if you drink a little coffee just before because caffeine blocks adenosine so muscles do not get tired as quickly. (Girdwain, 2013). That all sounds like good news to me but as with most other good things using too much can be problematic. There are health hazards that are associated with using too much caffeine or using it long term. The potential for abusing caffeine is low but it is considered to be an atypical drug of abuse and it is possible for some users to show signs of dependence or abuse. They may feel distressed by the amount of caffeine they use, feel like they cannot stop using it or feel unable to control the amount they are using Because of this there has been debate over whether or not caffeine abuse or dependence should be considered a diagnosis (Ogawa Ueki, 2007) Doctors Ogawa and Ueki state that, â€Å"current cases suggest that caffeine can produce a clinical dependence syndrome similar to those produced by other psychoactive substances† (Ogawa Ueki, 2007) Caffeine effects the brain by impersonating the neurochemical adenosine. Adenosine is produced by neurons and the more your body produces the calmer you become. When levels are high enough you get sleepy. The level of adenosine in the body is monitored through receptors, especially the A1 receptor, in the brain and in the body. Caffeine is the same shape and size of adenosine so it enters the receptors the same way but rather than activating them it blocks the nervous systems ability to monitor the level of adenosine. This allows the neurotransmitters glutamate and dopamine, which the body produces naturally, to continue providing their stimulant effect while the adenosine levels are essentially on hold. So caffeine isn’t really doing the stimulating, it just allows the dopamine and glutamate to do their thing unhindered by adenosine. This effect doesn’t last forever and eventually the nervous system will prevail and the tired or sluggish feelings return so we seek out more caffeine. This is why we feel like we can’t function until after the first cup of coffee each morning (DiSalvo, 2012). Caffeine begins to work quickly within the body but it impacts everyone a little differently. This results in cravings that trigger the smoker to reach for another cigarette that will deliver the nicotine the brain thinks it must have. As with caffeine and other addictive drugs the more nicotine you use the more you need as the body becomes tolerant. Smokers become chemically dependent early on and the addiction grows stronger over time. Neural pathways that connect smoking to all kinds of emotions and situations begin to form. Even though nicotine may have some benefits it seems that the risks outweigh the benefits. Jack Henningfield said, At this point, I would contend that the cognitive benefits which have been documented are of such limited generality and low magnitude that they could hardly be considered to be clinically meaningful, except for nicotines efficacy in reversing deficits which occur during cigarette abstinence in nicotine dependent people (Henningfield, 1994). Christianity and Substance Abuse Although smoking and caffeine use are not specifically addressed in the Bible there are many passages in the Bible that urge and warn Christians to avoid treating our bodies badly. One that clearly states how Christians should view substance abuse of any kind is found in 1st Corinthians. It reads, â€Å"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. While many Christians use caffeine and nicotine those things, especially when used to the point of addiction and abuse, would probably not be considered to be a way that we can glorify God with our bodies. Using these substances will not make a person unforgivable. They can still be saved and cannot lose their salvation if they are already saved. Freeing yourself from addiction is hard but if we a re willing to try we can find encouragement in Scripture as well. Phillipians 4:13 says, â€Å"I can do all things through him who gives me strength† (Holy Bible, NIV). The struggle may be real but the strength of Christ can help us overcome. Caffeine and Nicotine are both substances that affect the brain and body. They create feelings of pleasure within the body that leave us wanting to experience the feelings again. Caffeine can give us a much needed pick me up. It is easy to develop a habit of consuming caffeine and over time can turn into a dependency or addiction as we continue to trick our bodies into being alert and responsive. It is also easy to justify using caffeine as the risk for abusing it is low and moderate use doesn’t seem to be terribly dangerous. There are certainly worse things we could be putting in our bodies than coffee, colas and Hershey bars. Nicotine dependency can happen fairly quickly. The brain adapts to the drug and the desire to keep levels of nicotine and dopamine steady is so strong that it drives the user to keep going back for more. This is often the case even when they know fully well that doing so is likely damaging their health, could shorten their lifespan and can be compromising the health of the people who are around them when they smoke. They may wish to stop smoking but the changes that nicotine causes within the body make quitting a monumental task and if they do manage to stop using products containing nicotine the chance of relapsing is fairly high. There are products available that may help people who are trying to stop smoking. They provide nicotine in measured amounts to help people maintain and decrease nicotine levels while avoiding the habit of smoking cigarettes to get their fix. People can try using chewing gum with nicotine, patches that are applied to the skin that allow nicotine to be absor bed into the body, nasal sprays and electronic cigarettes. These products also eliminate the exposure to the 4000 plus compounds that are released when tobacco is burned (Julien et al, 2011). Conclusion Researching caffeine and nicotine through new lenses has revealed that they both act very similarly to other addictive drugs within the body. The body enjoys them and desires them. The body can become tolerant to both so users will need to use more to satisfy the cravings. They may not be illegal but they certainly can be addictive. Dead Poets Society Essay

Both The Mosquito Coast and Weir’s next feature, Dead Poets Society (1989), foreground fathers myopically invested in misguided personal aspirations. A significant critical and commercial success, Dead Poets Society is a period piece set in the 1950s in Welton College, a private boys school, at the heart of New England’s establishment. It is a study in the mechanisms with which the ruling class absorbs and expels rebellious influences before proceeding undeterred in its primary mission of reproducing itself. As in Picnic, Weir introduces eager young lives both oozing potential and straining under expectation. In both period pieces Weir deftly establishes the restrictive weight of the institution’s traditions through repeated interior, constricted compositions. Here, however, the challenge to the status quo, far from being a mysterious force, is an enthusiastic, unconventional teacher, John Keating (Robin Williams), who nevertheless will play a role in leading the boys to a traumatic awakening. Keating’s passion for literature moves his students to personal quests of self-expression: â€Å"Make your lives extraordinary†, he pleads. The film evokes the American spirit of democratic self-actualisation, as epitomised by the poet Walt Whitman, a portrait of whom Keating displays in his classroom and gestures toward when inciting the boys to emulate his free spirit. Inspired by Keating, the boys re-establish the â€Å"Dead Poets Society†, a club that Keating himself had participated in when a student at Welton. They convene at night in the romantic setting of a nearby cave and share poetry. Keating’s encouragement proves most successful with one of the â€Å"Dead Poets†, Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke), a teenager so neglected by his parents that he is fearful of human interaction, and petrified of public speaking. Weir subtly conveys the evolving effect Keating’s presence has on Todd, through dexterous camera placement in a series of scenes. In the initial scene, Todd chases his roommate, Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard), around their dorm room, trying to retrieve a poem he was composing as an assignment for Keating, which Neil is now playfully reciting aloud. The camera captures the action in a continuous spiralling, pan shot of the boys running in circles within their confined space, creating a spirited, flowing sense of movement. Later, in a long take (28 seconds), the static camera observes Todd, again in his room, as he reads his poem to himself while walking in circles. He is initially pacing at a steady rhythm and smiling to himself, animated by his work, but he then gradually slows and begins to look less sure, before ultimately stopping and despondently tearing up his poem. A cut transfers us to the boys’ classroom the next day, where they are reading their compositions. Todd cowers, insisting he did not prepare a poem, but is encouraged by Keating to usher forth inspiration from Whitman’s portrait for an improvised composition in front of the class. As Keating covers Todd’s eyes, eliciting poetry from the student, the two walk around in continuous circles, followed by the camera, which in turn circles around them in a continuous shot. The effect is a vertiginous one of dizzying movement, which captures the moment of release and rupture for Todd, as he overcomes his inhibitions and spontaneously recites a heartfelt creation, eliciting impressed silence, followed by applause from his classmates. This series of circular movemen ts, suggesting Todd’s burgeoning capacity for self-expression, represents Weir at his most subtle and sophisticated. Todd’s ability to spontaneously compose and recite is rendered all the more persuasive by the almost subliminal referencing of the previous moments of circular movement. Keating’s influence holds different consequences for Todd’s roommate, the kind and charming Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard). When Neil’s father learns that his son has discovered a passion for theatre, he forbids him from performing in the local production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Neil defies him, only to be informed after the performance that his father is removing him from Welton the next day and sending him instead to military academy, after which he will attend medical school. The news constitutes a ten-year sentence for the artistically inclined teenager, who cannot bear the prospect. That night, in a haunting sequence of elisions, we learn through his parent’s distraught, slow motion reactions that Neil has killed himself. John Keating is indirectly blamed for Neil’s death and the school authorities coax some of the boys Keating had taken into his trust into condemning his unconventional teaching. Rather than presenting a facile depiction of a repressive establishment’s collapse against the ultimately victorious seekers of self-expression (a favourite American tale), Weir explores the scapegoating mechanism through which the establishment responds to a challenge to its symbolic order. As Keating’s class sits sheepishly, listening to droll instruction from the school principal who orchestrated Keating’s dismissal and who is now teaching his poetry class, their former teacher enters the room to collect his belongings. Before Keating leaves, Todd, previously unable to talk in front of a group, boldly stands on his desk (a position Keating had occasionally encouraged them to assume in order to â€Å"change their perspective†) and turns in one last circular motion, this time to face Keating and address him with the teacher’s favourite Whitman address, â€Å"Oh Captain, my Captain†. Rousing music builds to a crescendo as the school principal repeatedly orders Todd to get down or risk expulsion. The boy stands firm, looking more composed than ever before, as various other students follow his lead. A high angle point of view shot reveals Keating, with eyes watering, from Todd’s vantage point. With this final scene of defiance, Weir suggests that the seeds of discontent that will usher in the counter-culture of the 1960s have been sown.

The sampling of water was based on human and aquatic activities around the lake. Water from five sampling stations of Varhala Lake was monitored for seasonal variations from May 2011 to April 2012. The BOD was positively correlated with COD of 0.609, as both are the products of oxidation. The correlation between DO and BOD, gave a negative relationship of 0.517 between two variables.
